Sugar-free Constipation

Constipation is remarkably common at the start of sugar-free living, which seems counter intuitive when our diet has suddenly become much healthier!

This seems to be for several reasons;
- A massive change on microbiome in the gut. Sugar and processed carbs help to feed unhealthy bacteria when this stops and we put in the good stuff chaos can ensue, showing itself in loose stools or constipation. Make sure you include pre-biotic foods such as garlic, onion, banana, leek etc that will help the good bacteria flourish.

Also you could include either probiotic tablets or things like sauerkraut, kefir, natural yogurt which will increase the amount of good bacteria and help your bowel flora stabilise.

- Another good remedy is soaked linseeds/flaxseeds, soak a tsp in warm water over night, in the morning they will have softened and be a bit gloopy, you can then add them (including water) to porridge, muesli etc or have them off the spoon.

- The other thing that could be going on is that sugar, along with caffeine, 'kick' starts our adrenalin response which often loosens our bowels. Many many people unwittingly rely on this adrenal response to go to the loo everyday. When sugar stops our adrenals calm down and we loose this reflex.

Finally you could also try this Acupressure point as shown in the picture, find it in the apex of the joint between the theme and fore finger.

Massage firmly and slowly in a clockwise direction for a couple of minutes; this point is on the Large Intestine meridian and will often stimulate the bowel.
